Vietnam might have been late to Southeast Asia’s beach party, but it was well worth the wait.

The country boasts more than 3400km of coastline, with infinite stretches of powdery sand, coves, lagoons, impossible boulder formations and tropical islands ringed with yet more beaches. So there is a huge advantage for famous golf course architect coming here and built many great “link course” style.

A links course is along the sea, consists of sandy soil and has little vegetation other than tall sea grasses and gorse, a hearty low-growing evergreen plant. The natural terrain is used to develop the golf holes. Many of the bunkers were once natural windswept dunes. The layout of the holes is also part of a true links course, with the first nine going out to the farthest point from the clubhouse and the second nine bringing you back. Let’s take a look into some of great link courses that you can find here in Vietnam.

The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip was designed to capture the true essence of links-style golf. Set on the coastline — as almost all great links courses are — The Bluffs is routed over and around towering sand dunes, which have been shaped over thousands of years by the elements. The wind plays a major role in the experience here; it’s always strong, and its prevailing direction differs depending on the time of year.

Said the course’s designer, Greg Norman: “The experience of playing true links golf among the dunes of southern Vietnam and having dramatic ocean views throughout your round will make The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip one of the most unique golf experiences in the world.”

Sea Links Golf and Country Club in Phan Thiet is the first links golf course in Vietnam. Situated on a cliff and sandy dunes, it is built on a 134 hectare area, 60 metres above sea level and with some amazing views of the ocean below. This Vietnam golf course lies in the heart of a simply breathtaking countryside. There are miles and miles of golden sands, the ocean and many nearby attractions. Sea Links Golf and Country Club is well serviced by many excellent Resorts, hotels and restaurants. Not only does it offer a golf course, but it is also an ideal place to visit, relax and reside.

The 2012 Forbes Travel Guide rated Montgomerie Links as one of Asia’s ten most elite courses. It has been designed to capitalize on its close proximity to the warm, tranquil East Sea and famed Marble Mountains, which are clearly visible from various points on the 18-hole course.

The over-arching design philosophy behind all of Colin Montgomerie’s designs is to work closely with natural characteristics of each site. Montgomerie Links Vietnam has many truly outstanding natural features. The sandy soil, wind-blown dunes, and indigenous vegetation combine to create the framework for a very strong links-style golf course that caters to players of all abilities and is a sheer delight to play.

Although the course doesn’t officially have a signature hole, the stunning par-5 12th is truly memorable. Playing slightly uphill to a bunker-riddled fairway, the hole is framed by the clubhouse in the background and has been described as the best par-5 in Vietnam.
